Druk

0.1 Druk

Born in Bhutan, 1967
In the zoo of Zurich since 1968, as a present of the king of Bhutan to the inhabitants of Zurich.

Druk is auntie elephant. She looks after all young animals. Druk does not show a normal progesterone cycle. I.e. her progesterone level is always very low and so she can’t get babies. Druk is never with the bull, because both elephants don’t get on well with each other.
Ceyla

0.1 Ceyla

Born in in Sri Lanka, 1975
In the zoo of Zurich since 1976.
She had to be raised by a milk bottle, because she was still very tiny and skinny. When she arrived in Zurich, Ceyla had less weight than her 6 babies when they were born.

Farha

0.1 Farha

On Tuesday, 03 May 2005 at 8.55 am, an elephant baby was born. This new born female elephant shall be called Farha (luck, joy).
The birth itself just lasted a few minutes: the calf was born amidst the group outside of the house. The whole group then made up a tight circle around the calf, that could stand up after just 7 minutes, if a bit shaky still. The group then escorted the baby on its first few steps.

More pictures about the birth...

Farha is Ceylas 6. baby .
Against the past rules it was born briefly not during the night in the brood box, but before 9 o'clock in the outdoor enclosure.
Indy

0.1 Indy

Born in Burma, 1986
Came to the Circus KNIE in 1988
In the zoo of Zurich since 1999
Indy is a “bad” circus elephant because of her somehow hectic temper and her social nature. Because the zoo of Zurich was looking for another breeding cow. Indy found a new home in the elephant house of Zurich and does immediately see herself as Aishu’s young auntie.

After she was successfully covered by Maxie, she gave birth to Chandra on 13th May 2002. Indy proves to be an ideal elephant mother and zoo elephant.

Chandra

0.1 Chandra

Born in the night of 13th May 2002 at 11:10 p.m..

After her birth Chandra had a height of about 97 cm and a weight of about 115 kg. Compared to her half-brother, she is a small baby elephant.
Chandra is very bright and she stood on her own four feet already after 10 minutes and began to search for her mother’s breast. At 5 o’clock in the morning she drank her mother’s precious milk for the first time.
